How I Start Blogging: From College Passion to Professional Platform

JP Abecilla

I started blogging on Blogger.com in August 2013 to support the organization I founded in college: The Ambassadors' Club. My initial articles focused on tips for studying and preparing for exams, with titles like "Preparing for a Test" and "Smart Test Strategy." Additionally, I wrote about values and personal development, aligning with the main focus of our student organization. At that time, I never referred to my work as "blogging" and certainly never thought to boast about it. My primary goal was to create resources to help other students learn and prepare for life after university.

As a former Bible teacher and preacher, I blended academic and biblical principles in my early blog posts. This approach earned me both followers and critics. However, due to my many extracurricular activities in college, I couldn't consistently maintain my blog. I was a member of the CNU Chorale, debated with the CNU Debate Society, and participated in the CNU English Fellows by default. I also founded The Ambassadors' Club and served in the CNU Supreme Student Government as a Senator and Chairman of the Committee on Grievance. Consequently, my next blog update came in 2015, almost two years later, focusing more on my religious and political views.

In 2017, I transitioned to blogging on WordPress.com, with a renewed focus on empowering people through motivational content. My understanding of social media and online interactions had broadened, and I began working as a website content writer, which deepened my knowledge of creating websites and online content. I upgraded my free WordPress account to Premium and purchased my domain name, www.jpabecilla.com, through GoDaddy. Unfortunately, I lost the site and secured a different name: www.JPAbecillaPH.com

Despite my diverse interests—writing, social media, motivation, public speaking, business, career, politics, and religion—I chose not to limit myself to a single niche. This broad range of topics inspired my unique title: JP Abecilla - The Millennial Writer. At a time when people are fascinated by the millennial generation's influence on technology, communication, business, and society, my title reflects my identity as a full-time writer and a millennial navigating these changes.

August 2019 marked six years of blogging and one year with my paid domain. There is always more to learn about the blogosphere, particularly the technical skills that accompany it. I am excited to continue exploring the world of blogging and to provide more relevant content to my audience as both a blogger and a Filipino influencer.
